Giving Jars, Feeding Back

Throughout this process, I’ve been receiving emails and letters from people who have been using these products. Thank you! Some of you have sent me useful suggestions, great ideas, fantastic stories and a lot of hope. I realized that this a platform is designed for sharing those stories along with the products, so I’ve gotten permission from a few folks to post their comments on this page. This week I’ll be sending out email surveys to a few of you who have been using these products for awhile now, particularly if you’ve purchased more than once or if I met you along the road to where I stand. I value your opinion.

To start the ball rolling, this is  from a friend in Costa Rica that is using a Giving Jar of Lavender Recovery Recipe to treat a skin condition  on his arms. Now he’s got another use for it:

“I had been having very painfull cramps in my feet during the night for many years and a few weeks ago they came back i had the cream that Shea gave me and used it as the cramps begun. They stopped, i could not believe it. Last night the cramps begun again i used the cream again and the cramps immediately stopped. Thank you.”

Here’s another one from a woman who came into the farm store here in New Mexico:

“Last week I was at your store and bought some Comfrey Salve for my feet.  You let me try the Emu oil stick. I will say it was fantastic.  I let four other people try the product and they too said it was an almost instant heal for them.  I will be out in the next few weeks for some more. Thank you,
Charlene”

The Emu Oil Stick she’s describing was a totally new product I just created that morning for a friend who told me that she finds it easier to apply moisturizer to her feet when she uses a stick. When Charlene arrived at the store and told me she needed more of the Comfrey Salve because she’s been using it on her feet, I asked her to try this new product as well. It was a Giving Jar, and I was excited to share this exquisite animal oil (the rest of my oils are plant-based). My friend raises the Emus and harvests the oil herself, so I know where the ingredient comes from, and the research speaks for itself.

Note: Since I received Charlene’s email, I’ve finished the product formulation and it’s currently available at the Bee Chama Farm Store in Lemitar New Mexico for $12. The Lemongrass & Calendula Foot Rub with Emu & Argan oil will be available for purchase online later this week.

Here’s another letter I received from a friend who purchased two of the Honey Lip Balms:

“WOW!  I am a pretty huge lip balm addict and I’ve tried so many different kinds.  My favorite one in the world got discontinued awhile ago and I am down to the bottom of my very last pot.  I kept trying to find a new one that was just as good and I didn’t really like anything I tried until I got yours!  Seriously, it is the BEST lip balm I’ve ever used, and it’s a fraction of the cost of most of the ones I’ve tried, and the only one with no scary-sounding ingredients that I don’t even recognize.  It tastes great (cream soda is my favorite soda ever!), the consistency is perfect, and it stays on forever.  I love it so much!  I plan to order it regularly, so watch out, LOL. ”

All of this makes me smile… makes my heart happy. It’s why I want to do keep doing this. Thank you all for supporting me in this adventure, and if you have any Feed Back of your own, please send it to SheaByShay@gmail.com

Blueberry Bright Seaweed Facial

_DSC0047 (5)Amazing! It tightens and brightens, exfoliates and draws out toxins. I can’t say enough good things, so you’ll just have to try it yourself. Here’s some basic research about the ingredients:

Green Clay “drinks” oils, toxins and impurities out of your skin. Blueberry Leaf is packed with antioxidants. Seaweed tones and firms the skin, and is used for full body cellulite masks in beauty spas around the world. Royal Jelly regenerates cells and promotes new skin growth, and increases collagen production. Read the linked articles and find out more!

That’s it for ingredients; no synthetics, preservatives or chemicals. Only the good stuff! Just mix it with water! You can even add a little of our Buckwheat Honey and a squirt of lime juice if you want. The results speak for themselves.

Small glass Jar (2.5 oz)  $20 + $5 shipping and handling

Honey Facials

_DSC0007 (5)I continue to wash my face with honey more frequently than soap. This particular honey, the North American Buckwheat, is one of the most medicinal honeys in the world. We hardly ever have it in stock at the bee farm, because this honey is made in the pacific northwest, a long way from home. We trade for it whenever we can, but we don’t get up to that part of the country very often.

This harvest, when we bottled this honey into half pints and quarts, I decided to jar up the scrubbiest buckwheat that I could get into the jar. All raw honey crystallizes over time; it’s just the glucose and the fructose in the honey rearranging itself. But when crystallized honey is applied to the skin, it becomes a natural exfoliate that will scrub off the dead skin, extra oils, residual makeup, and even bad bacteria. Raw honey is a natural anti-microbial, so it helps with the treatment of acne as well.

When I wash this honey off my face at night, my skin is soft, supple, and it smells (and tastes) like honey.  All good things! Give it a try. I bottled some of this scrubby buckwheat into 1oz jars, the perfect size for facials a few times a week for a month or so. It only take a little dollop on your finger! Run it under the water before you start scrubbing…. And then let me know what you think!

Update: After more than a year of offering this product along with 3 other varieties of facial scrubs, I’ve found that the Cat Claw Honey with Lavender oil is the best seller. (Very scrubby & the smell is so relaxing!) I also offer a Carrot & Citrus smooth face wash that has had great results. If you would like to try either the Lavender or the Carrot, just let me know in the notes of your purchase.

Thank Your Skin

Tonight I’m sitting at the kitchen table, talking and half listening to NPR on the radio. I’m thinking about the process of anointing myself with oil, and what it means for my body.

Skin: It’s the largest organ in our bodies.

I’m talking with my partner; just the two of us are at the table, and I’m putting small amounts of a body butter on my arms and legs. A little at a time. As I do this I’m thinking for a moment about each part of my body. My ankles, and what they do for me everyday. How they carry me around. I’m thinking about ingredients. And how this Lavender is such a soothing thing to put on my feet. I’m thinking about my calf muscles. They get sore when I stand too long or when I sit too long. I’m enjoying the massage and the cool touch of Aloe in this particular cream. I’m using just pea sized amounts and spreading it out, a tiny bit at a time. I’m thinking about my knees. About a car accident when I was younger and the leftover ache. I’m thinking about my scars, and how much my body has been through over all these years. I’m grateful. I’m thinking about the pointy elbows that embarrassed me as a teenager. I’m thinking about all the times that these elbows took a hit so that some other part of me wouldn’t have to…

There’s something about skin. Maybe I’m thinking about it because I’m on a journey that loves my body, and I’m trying to mirror that Love. It covers every inch of us. When I think about skin, I thank everything that lies underneath of it. What a remarkable gift, to have a heart that beats and moves my blood without my conscious thought! To have cells that grow and duplicate and heal while I remain unknowing… But I do know that whatever I touch and whatever touches me, will meet my skin along the way.

Earlier today I was mixing up a batch of my Lavender Recovery Recipe, so that’s what I was using tonight. It’s my favorite thing when I really want to soothe and nurture… The aloe is so amazing. I keep mine in the fridge, on the top shelf, and it gets hard. I take it out whenever I think about using it, and within a couple hours it’s soft and whippy. But when I’m impatient, like tonight, I just wash my hands really well and then dig it out of the jar, melting the chunks in my hands…

Because of this particular cream, I’m thinking about Luauna, a woman who inspires me constantly. I’m thinking about sending her another jar. I don’t think the last one had the Lavender in it. She is a beautiful soul. I’m thinking about giving this product to people who really need it. Good thoughts, while I take in the scent of pretty purple flowers, ceremonial herbs and ancient trees that stand strong in changing waters…

When we care for our skin, we can take the opportunity to think about all the parts of our bodies that are protected by this beautiful covering. We can massage the parts that are sore, we can water the parts that are dry, we can feed the parts that are trying to heal themselves… When we take that few minutes to care for ourselves, we’re better equipped to care for our world.

And by the way, if you or someone you know is going through radiation treatments or chemotherapy, has severe skin damage or a serious skin condition, I believe they might benefit from this particular product. Contact me ( SheaByShay@gmail.com) and we’ll get them a Giving Jar.

Spread the Skin Care Love & Enjoy your Day,

Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment

Just to say a little about where this idea came from; after I moved to the desert, my waist-length brown hair started breaking and falling out. I’ve had split ends for years, and I’ve never cut or trimmed my hair for some sort of strange spiritual reason that I won’t go into right now, so I ended up losing more than 12 inches of my hair length to breakage in less than a year. I actually cried over this… call me vain but I freakin liked having long hair. So I started looking things up, I switched to organic shampoo (really hard to find!) and tried to ditch the chemicals. I brushed my hair less, wore it up more often, bought a special hairbrush. I tried everything, nothing was working… if y’all have more suggestions I’ll still take them, but…

I started putting Shea Butter in my hair about the same time I started putting it on my skin. I had read that it should be applied to damp hair after a shower as a leave-in treatment, paying special attention to split ends. I did this, and probably over-did it. My hair looked greasy! I felt like I had just gotten out of the shower. And it had a strange, sticky feeling right after i put it on. There was no denying it though, it sealed my split ends and when it dried (or got absorbed, I guess) my hair was softer than it has ever been. I wondered how to combat the greasy side effects, so I played with the amount I used. I’ve found that the most appropriate application is to apply it only to the driest tips of my hair, piecing it out and covering the tips. I stay away from the roots until I’m getting ready to take a shower, and then I apply it lightly to my whole head.

This product came from the idea to add Juniper Berry, which helps with hair fall out and breakage, especially when applied to the roots, and Jojoba Oil, which is renowned for healing broken hair. After playing around with the proper application (that doesn’t make me look like a grease-head) I like it and use it after a shower about every other day.

The decision to make it available to you came from a friend of mine, who happened to ask if I had gotten my hair cut the other day…. She said it looked so nice, it looked freshly trimmed. I looked at the tips, and the ends don’t look split. I lose less hair in the shower and into my hairbrush. It feels like it’s getting thicker in the back. I think my hair is on the upswing. If you want to try it, let me know how it works for you.

Lavender Recovery Recipe Skin Drink

_DSC0284

This was formulated for a friend of mine going through radiation treatments. I call it “Luauna Cream” because it was made just for her, but then I started using it and realized how amazing it was. So now it’s available for you too…  Aloe Vera is incredible for recuperating lost moisture in the skin, and Shea Butter is full of essential vitamins that help the skin rebuild itself after serious damage. This cream is going to be good for folks who have burns (even sunburns) or serious damage from radiation. Frankincense is an ancient herb with amazing healing and regenerative properties. It cleanses and soothes, and the Lavender acts as an antiseptic. I read that the absolute best thing to put on a third degree burn is Aloe, Raw Honey and Lavender. So this cream contains all three and then some. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have, and that it works for you the way it has worked for us…

Lavender Recovery Recipe Natural Ingredients:

Raw Unfiltered Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera Juice, Orange Blossom Honey, Safflower Oil with Vitamin E, Essential Oils of Frankincense, Cypress and Lavender.

Keep this in the fridge and use it as a cold cream! The Aloe Vera is not as shelf-stable as some of the oils, even after mixing it with Vitamin E to preserve… So keep this skin food in the fridge with your other groceries and it will be good for as long as you need it to be. Spread the Love!

Just for comparison

A friend of a friend mentioned a product she was using, and I looked it up. It’s the internet age, these things are two clicks away…. Right away I took a look at the ingredients list. I actually had to expand it, and then zoom out to fit it all on the screen for the shot.

Capture

Personally, this freaks me out. And they were charging $40 for less than 2oz of product. Here’s another example:

1904154_787859764571489_4683635080839649948_n

This is the back of a bottle of product I used to use on my face! Yikes! I checked some of the ingredients on this one. Here’s the verdict. Mineral Oil and Petrolatum are both petroleum byproducts that cannot be absorbed by the skin, they just sit on top of the surface. Practically useless. Cetyl palmitate is the ester derived from palmitic acid and cetyl alcohol. Cetyl Alcohol is an emulsifier, used to get the oil and the water to mix. Glycerin is essentially a byproduct of soap, and Glyceryl Hydroxytearate and Stearic Acid (which used to be harvested from the stomachs of farm animals and from the bodies of euthanized cats and dogs, but I think they’ve turned to more synthetic production methods) is also an emulsifier, used to make oil and water mix. I skipped down at this point because I was curious about that DMDM Hydantoin, and sure enough, it can potentially cause cancer and is rated a 7 out of 10 in toxicity (highly hazardous to health) by an environmental working group called Skin Deep. Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate is rated moderately hazardous because it can cause organ and tissue damage. The polymers haven’t been studied too much in America, but some production companies warn that repeated use can cause dermatitis. They are manufactured with Benzene, and some of that is proven to linger and be absorbed by the skin and into the blood, particularly in this specific polymer. Benzene is a known carcinogenic chemical, also found in our food. And our skin is the largest organ in our bodies.

Feel free to browse my ingredient list. Do some research. Make a decision that’s right for you. I’ve linked them all to websites that will assist you in getting more information, and some of them might even offer to sell you the ingredient or some other product. I don’t care! Buy it if you want it. My stuff is better for me. It uses all of these ingredients in combinations that heal, cleanse, moisturize and protect my skin in amazing ways. And they all come directly from the plants that have been healing us for eons. Ancient civilizations, indigenous cultures…

The root of all people grows in the earth where it was planted. Intuitively, people know what to do with these plants.

And I’m committed to learning. Every time you purchase one of my products, you are testing my intuitive sense of chemistry. It’s why I love feedback.

And I love these ingredients.

Unrefined, Raw Shea Butter. My primary ingredient. The foundation of my products. It has my name. It’s spectacular. Rich in vitamins A, E, D, F, and K. If you only read about one product, read about this one!

Raw Mango Butter. Found in two products, the Mango My Morning Cream and the Summer Day Skin Drink. Shea butter has more minerals and vitamins, but the absorption rate is faster with Mango, and it leaves a satin finish. There is no oily feeling, and it smells sweeter than Shea. They work fabulously together. Read More.

Thank You Comfrey

_DSC0433

About a year ago, on a patch of land in the southern mountains of Colorado, I was introduced to a plant named Comfrey.

I’d never seen it before, but something told me to reach out and touch it’s leaves. They are fuzzy, covered in little white hairs, and feel almost prickly to the touch. It’s an unforgettable texture, and I’m a ‘texture person’ so it was easy to remember despite my typically frustrating inability to keep track of plant names and details. That same summer, I was introduced to another fuzzy plant called Mullein, which is the softest plant in the world as far as I’m concerned, and every camper’s best friend when nature calls.

So after that first hand-shake with those fuzzy leaves, I forgot all about Comfrey, honestly…. Until the one day that my friend Steve badly bruised his ribs.

He’s an older man, somewhat disabled, and he had fallen down the stairs. His bruised ribs were making it difficult to get up and go about his day, and the pain was making him miserable. Worried about him, I told a friend about his ribs  and asked if I should give him an herb called Arnica, that I’ve used with great success on a bruised shoulder. This wise friend recommended that I go to the herb shop in town instead, and ask about a Comfrey Salve. I remembered the prickly plant from Colorado, but had never heard of a salve.  After an hour long discussion with my local herbalist ( a brilliant woman named Ember that I hope to introduce you to via the internet at some point along this journey ) I had been informally educated about the bone-knitting, muscle healing and cell-regenerating qualities of this particular plant. I was also armed with 2 small jars of an amazing (albeit quite expensive) Comfrey Salve. It was green, smelled lovely, and was made right here in New Mexico. I took one to my friend Steve’s house right away. He agreed to apply it to his ribs every day when he got out of the shower, and he told me that he could “tell by the way it smells” that it was good medicine.

I went home and studied the ingredients list on the Comfrey Salve with my computer open to the google homepage. I started doing some research, with the thought in mind that I knew where to find at least 7 organic Comfrey plants the next time I took a trip up to that remote canyon in southern Colorado….

A week later I went to visit my friend Steve. He was standing up straight when he opened the door. Sitting at his kitchen table petting his roommate’s little dog, Blanca, he told me with excitement about applying the salve every day after he last saw me.

“I woke up on the 4th day,” he said, “and the pain was gone.”

Completely? “Totally. Now every time something hurts, I just go get me a little bit of that miracle (stuff),” he says, “and I put that on there, and it goes away.”

 _DSC0016 (5)

So when I took a trip up to that canyon in Colorado a few weeks later, it was a no-brainer. The plants were huge, bright green, lush and propagating. There were three more of them growing up around the others. I harvested enough large, fuzzy leaves to infuse a quart of oil. And that oil became the base of my first Comfrey Salve.

I sent out 10 jars to friends and family who had sore feet and muscles. Everyone in my house was using it on all of their sore muscles and bruises with wonderful results. And a couple months later I was back up in that same canyon. The Comfrey was starting to flower. I decided on one more harvest before I leave them alone for the summer. I waited for the right time, and infused again. I did it a little differently, with a different oil base, for a different amount of time at a different elevation. The infusion is amazing.

The sunshine in the mountains is incredibly intense, and the weather is so lovely that the hills and forests are irresistible. I blistered my forehead with a severe sunburn that weekend, climbing up the rocks to get the gorgeous views of the valley. As soon as I realized what I had done and how bad the burn was, I opened the jar of my infusion and applied the oil directly to the burn.

The skin literally grew up around the blisters within 3 hours and the burn that covered my entire face had turned to a tan in 12 hours flat. It was incredible.

_DSC0032 (5)

I used this oil, a tincture, another amazing plant called Calendula, and a combination of sage oils to create my Sacred Sage & Comfrey Salve. I’ve sent out more of these in the mail to friends and family who have suddenly been injured, broken a bone, or have persistent muscle pain and bruising. I have two more jars of oil infusing right now… and there will be another harvest this fall.

But it’s not an infinite resource in my world, because I want to be gentle with the plants and ensure their continued growth.

I will not over-harvest. I’m grateful to have the privilege of utilizing such an amazing medicinal herb; for me it is an awesome manifestation of divine love & healing that grows right out of the ground we stand on. Entirely complex; amazingly simple.
